This activity was due to determine the quality of four different water samples: 1-water impurified with small bits of acid substances, 2-rain water, 3-tap water, 4-water impurified with soap.
The 13 year old students determined the pH,
the quantity of dissolved oxygen, the presence of sulphate ions and chloride
ions.
Conclusions: The rain water and the tap
water have pH about 7, the water of sample 1 is acid and sample 2 is basic; The quantity of dissolved
oxygen is very small in all the samples, because they were not taken from a
lake or a river; All samples contain very
small quantities of sulphate and chloride ions except the rain water.
The evaluation test given by the chemistry
teacher Viorica Cortojan, showed that the students were interested in this
activity, they acquired new information and they would like to determine the
quality of water in the rivers passing by our city.
